Helping middle and back of the pack runners find community and confidence in the sport through resources and race training cohorts for distance running
Inclusivity. Empowerment. Community.
Welcome to Your Place in the Pack
Southern Running Collective hosts a mix of virtual and in-person events across Metro Atlanta
House Rules
- No diet-y or weight talk- we’re here to honor our bodies, not shrink them
- No pace shaming- of someone else’s or your own
- “Just” is not a qualifier- you didn’t “just” run a mile or whatever other distance. You freakin did that distance!

“The Collective transformed my perception of what it meant to be a runner. I learned that this transformative sport wasn’t only for those with bodies and athletic histories that looked different than mine.“
– Jenny M.
Race Training Cohorts
Distance running doesn’t exist in a vacuum, and runners are more successful when they have a support system. Each member brings their own experiences, questions, and insights, and we learn from one another along the way.
Race Training Cohorts are small groups that will work together over several months towards a goal race. You’ll receive structure, accountability, and connection to help you reach your race goals. Cohorts are led by a Registered Dietitian and RRCA Certified Running Coach.

About
The Collective
Southern Running Collective isn’t quite a group run, but rather a supportive community that aims to encourage slower runners through race training cohorts, highlight organizations who treat our runners with respect, and connect runners to existing resources across Metro Atlanta
The Founder
Coach Danielle wasn’t into sports at all growing up. After running her first 5K in 2012, she instantly fell in love with the race day energy and the running community. She has never been fast, and after running 230+ races, she has seen what works well for slower runners and what may not.
Her hope is that every runner, no matter how long it takes them to cover the distance, is treated with the same respect and access to resources as faster runners.
As a Registered Dietitian, Coach Danielle believes that you don’t need to change your body to fit an image of what a “traditional” runner looks like.
Mission
Expand the running community by creating spaces where every middle and back of the pack runner feels supported and empowered through inclusive coaching built on connection rather than comparison
Vision
Transform the running culture into one where anyone who wants to be a runner gains the confidence and support to pursue that goal, regardless of pace, body type, or experience

“I never thought I could be a runner, but Coach Danielle convinced me that I could. She taught me that EVERYONE can do a 5K, and that it’s not about winning. Running is about going out there, doing your best, and bettering yourself each time. Every time I put on my running shoes I feel accomplished, and every race I finish is a celebration.”
– Meaghan H.

FAQs
General
Who is this for?
Southern Running Collective is for you if you’ve ever said:
- “I don’t look like a runner”
- “I have to lose weight/get faster/run without stopping to walk before I can really be a runner”
- “I’m afraid to go to a group run or race because I don’t want to be last”
You’re comfortable covering 1-3 miles at a pace of ~11:00-18:00+/mile
You identify as a slower runner or walker, AKA the middle or back of the pack
You’re a new OR seasoned runner
Can I be part of Southern Running Collective if I run faster than an 11:00/mile pace?
Absolutely! When we say everyone is welcome here, we mean it. We would love for you to use the resource directory, attend pop-up events, and encourage our runners by running with them at their pace or cheering them on from the sidelines (bonus points if you stay for the final finishers)
I’ve never run before, so I don’t know my pace. Can I still join?
We suggest giving a mile a try and knowing your pace/mile beforehand. You may be at a different speed than you think, so we want to see how Southern Running Collective can best support you
Do you host a group run?
Southern Running Collective doesn’t currently host its own regularly scheduled group run; instead, we connect runners with existing group runs across the Metro Atlanta area
However, there are a variety of pop-up events throughout the year open to everyone, and cohort members have access to additional private events
Why does Southern Running Collective have House Rules?
Great question! It’s not because we like to be rigid and boring. It’s because slower runners often have encounters that have led them to experience judgment or exclusion in certain environments. This is especially true if a runner holds any marginalized identity. The House Rules help to remove barriers, so SRC remains a supportive and respectful place for everyone
What does the Southern Running Collective name mean?
“Southern” is our founder’s last name, but it also channels Southern hospitality and the entire region that we hope to expand to. “Collective” encompasses the growth we experience from shared learning and experiences
Race Training Cohorts
What are the distances that the race training cohorts will cover?
“Long distance” is subjective, but we consider it anything that is a 10K or more. Our goal is to have cohorts for 10Ks, 10 Milers, Half Marathons, and Marathons. The goal races will be announced on a rolling basis
Why are new and seasoned runners part of the same cohorts?
Regardless of experience, we’re all working towards the same goal race. There is a mix of experience levels because each member brings their own backgrounds, questions, and insights, and we learn from one another along the way
What if I miss a cohort meeting?
Life happens! We record sessions, and they will be available to members to watch when they have time
Why is the application deadline for The Long Run tier sooner than The Group Run tier?
To create an individualized training plan, we need time to meet with you and learn your goals in time for the start of your cohort
Do I have to live in Atlanta or Georgia to be part of a cohort?
No! Members can live anywhere in the US and participate. Events will be held in Eastern time, 99% of the time
Can I be part of a cohort if I want to run a different race that is the same distance and season as the goal race?
Maybe. There are a lot of factors that could influence whether this would be a good fit. Contact Us or email [email protected], and we’ll figure it out together
What if I want to train individually and not as a group?
While community is a large part of Southern Running Collective, we understand that some people prefer running to be more personal. If you are interested in 1:1 run coaching, please contact us or email [email protected]
Will this program help me lose weight?
Maybe, maybe not. Our focus is listening to and honoring our bodies, not shrinking them. Our founder practices from a Health at Every Size® and weight-inclusive lens, meaning weight loss is not required to lead a full life. As a reminder, Southern Running Collective does not encourage diet-y or weight talk
Get Involved
I’m a run club leader/medical or fitness provider/store owner/brand manager/etc, and I want to get involved! How can I support Southern Running Collective?
We would love to chat! There are a variety of ways to be part of SRC, such as joining the resource directory, sponsoring a race cheer station, hosting a shakeout run, presenting an educational topic to a cohort, and more! Contact Us or email [email protected], and we’ll be in touch
